Is it okay to be jaded all the time?
I know this person who is completely null and void of any feelings; stoic if you will. This person got into an argument with his neighbor’s about walking and sex noise coming from the apartment he was living in. When asked "how would you feel about this if someone else did this?" the person simply replied, "been there done that, wouldn’t feel a thing".
I talked to this individual about his views on life and it turns out, life has been a bi’tch to this person. Hence the cold personality. Is it alright for this person to be so heartless and jaded throughout the remainder of life due to past experiences?
no, it’s not alright but it would take a considerable amount of thawing to get this person to be warm.
ashtraysandwich | Feb 04, 2010
I don’t believe stoicism is necessarily or essentially "bad". To say so would require a judgment based on personal values and beliefs and would not be based in objectivity. Just because one person might think life has to be passionate, joyous or emotional does not make it "right" nor does it mean someone else should conform to that thinking.
However, I would also say that someone with a cold personality is not a stoic. Stoicism works both ways. Not only is a stoic not overtly passionate or joyous, but they are not negative either. A stoic accepts the necessities in life without complaint. They live in the neutral.
So, if this person is truly cold, then they are not a stoic. They are probably depressed.
I don’t think it’s alright to live the way you describe this person. I feel like it’s a waste of a life and depending on your belief you might think you only have one life to live. It’s a gift and while it is all our personal choice how we choose to live I think it’s unfortunate when someone doesn’t enjoy it.
Life is a b’tch to a lot of people.. but many of them take it in stride and still find they can enjoy it overall. You know why they can?
Because past experiences are past, the future is not written, and the present is all we have.

Had to do this one…
I remember a from a faithful day a summers eve
With we as one as you broke away from the peace
Laying on my chest upon from a sleep you rose
Showing me the imperfections hidden beneath the rose
I asked why you have these fears on you tattooed for
Standing parallel by the mirror on my bathroom door
Your body coming near to me, my song sung through
Remember how tears could speak, lies told amongst you

Am I a smart loner or not too bright?
On a daily basis, I struggle with the thought that either I am not as bright as others, or much smarter than everyone around me. I know that I am depressed, this may be the cause. I have taken a professional IQ test and tested at genius level, and yet I have trouble fitting in, keeping good friendships. I meet new people all the time, this is not a problem, but after a while, it seems they slowly retreat from me. I want to think that I am smart. I got all A’s and some B’s in college, I have a good job, my looks are better than average. I love social settings, and partying, but while I like to have meaningful discussions about life and serious issues, others hardly know where they stand on the issues. Or most of the time, they have a different viewpoint, and do not know how to present an argument for their viewpoint. I get along and can have conversations with older adults, usually older than 35. (I’m 26) Lately people are also really starting to annoy me. I don’t know if I’m negative, and that’s what’s turning people off, but I’d like to find out. Basically, I probably should be talking to a shrink and not asking people strange questions.
I would suggest talking to a professional–being depressed is not a good feeling. You have self-doubt which can easily be overcome with that or what I like to call "lite" medication like vitamin D3. This and other prescribed medicine that is not strong. I hope you feel better soon!
Doctor W | Feb 07, 2010
You’re probably not as smart as you think you are, but you are smart. Some may call you elitist, I’ll say you just have confidence in yourself.
Chris S | Feb 07, 2010
I think you’re too selective with friends.

Do I have schizophrenia?
K i know i won’t find out just by asking on the computer but i just want opinions. So the thing is schizophrenia runs in my family with my uncle and great aunt. Possibly my dad. Also, i’ve hear smoking marijuana and drinking increases your chances. I do both. Not so much drinking anymore. I’m only 13 and I know my brain isn’t even developed fully yet. I hang out with kids 6 years older than me and I’m not innocent. So please don’t just yell at me and tell me to stop. I know what i’m doing to myself and I don’t care that isn’t the point of this. Anywho, so the schizophrenia that runs in my family is nonvoilent. But how I feel sometimes is like everyone talks about me behind my back and everyone is staring at me. I told my mom I wanted to beat up a girl at the grocery store because she looked at me. My mom thought i was going insane. I’ve stopped eating and I just stay in my room all day. I do online school and I don’t even talk to the kids there. I feel like my family is always just making fun of me and I can never take a joke. I just get upset and angry and go up to my room to sit on the computer. I can hear things too, like people saying my name from downstairs in my house. Or like someone is calling me. I thought a plastic bag was a face and I got so scared I thought it was going to start yelling at me or something. I feel like these things are getting worse gradually. Sometimes I see things moving in the corners of my eyes. and sometimes i think people are putting cameras in my room to watch me. My room is always dark and I talk to myself nonstop. Like I’m another person in the room. I don’t enjoy spending time with my family because I feel like they are all just trying to gang up on me or like they are talking crap about me 24/7. I hear music that isn’t playing. Like piano music or music you’d hear in Donnie Darko. Also my dad gets prescriptions all the time but my parents won’t tell me what it’s for and it makes me nervous. My mom says he’s just paranoid but it is called paranoid schizophrenia right?! I dont know what to think. Just give me your opinions. Please and thanks.
It sounds very possible that you have schizophrenia. It could also be another disorder, such as bipolar, which can also cause hallucinations and delusions in extreme cases. If your parents have a mental illness, your chances of developing one are much greater, although it doesn’t necessarily have to be the same one.
Drinking and drug use can trigger or exacerbate a disorder but they cannot cause one, strictly speaking. Mind-altering substances may in some cases trigger episodes of mania, depression, or psychosis in people who already have disorders involving those symptoms.
If you are worried about the symptoms you are experiencing, you should talk to a doctor right away. Auditory hallucinations (the music that isn’t playing, etc) and delusions that others are talking about you are often early signs of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.
By the way, good job hallucinating New Wave music. As hallucinations go, that one’s not bad at all! I’m going to listen to Tears For Fears now.
pesematology | Dec 15, 2009
I stopped several sentences in. You’re 13…. smoke pot…. drink alcohol….. hang out with people 6 years older than you……
You’re in for a world of hurt if you keep living like this. I don’t know if you have schizophrenia or not, but I suggest you speak to a counselor or something and find out.
The_D | Dec 15, 2009
A professional doctor would know more about these issues than anyone else on here. i have heard and seen things that are not their i got schizophrenia and PTSD anger, depression But i do not know what causes of a lot of these things. I just live with them and i take med’s for them to help me stay balanced i got a chemical imbalance in my brain.
i hope this helps
