You need to plan to leave. You can’t just up and go one day without thinking it through. I believe you should leave him. You can find another home. What you can’t find is happiness if you stay in that relationship. How can you make your child happy when you aren’t happy yourself. Come up with a plan on where to move to, do you have a job to pay the bills, you need to file for custody of your child. So think about everything you need to do and ask your friend how she did it. It sounds to me like she would be a good source of information and support. Once you have a plan then follow it and see it through. Don’t let him sweet talk you into coming back because things will not change. Good luck.

Timecop

Timecop
Timecop (1994)

IMDB rating: 5.40

Plot: In Washington DC in 1994, the Senate Oversight Committee (SOC) is being spoken to in the capitol building by George Spota, who explains that for the past 20 years, Doctor Hans Kleindast, the Nobel laureate who help the government with the space program back in the 1960s and 1970s, has been doing research, and his field of research has been time travel. The SOC believes that Hans is a quack — until George tells the SOC that Hans actually succeeded in his research and took a trip to the past then back to the present. You can’t travel into the future because the future hasn’t happened yet. George makes it clear that a covert agency is needed to police time travel, so the Time Enforcement Commission (TEC) is formed. Named as the director of the TEC is Commander Eugene Matuzak, formerly of the Washington DC police department. Senator Aaron McComb, who sees possibilities, agrees to chair the oversight on the new program. Sometime later, at a shopping center, TEC agent Max Walker and his wife Melissa are being watched by a pair of shady looking men. Later, at home. Max and Melissa spend some passionate time together. That night, Melissa is about to tell Max something extremely important when the phone rings. Max answers the phone and is told to go to TEC headquarters. Max gets dressed and as soon as Max opens the front door to go outside, he is attacked by the two men from the shopping center. As the two men are beating Max up. Max sees Aaron looking out the window of the bedroom that Melissa is still in, and Aaron is holding Melissa hostage, forcing Melissa to watch Max’s beating. The two men outside then shoot Max, who is wearing a bulletproof vest — and then an explosion engulfs the house, killing Melissa. On October 30, 1929, on Wall Street in New York City, a man named Lyle Atwood enters an office building and rides an elevator up to an office. There is a sudden ripple in the office, and Max enters from the future. It turns out that Lyle is Max’s partner, and Lyle is planning to stop the depression from happening. Max wants to know who Lyle is working for, and Lyie calls two security men into the office to deal with Max. Max beats up the two security men, and Lyle pulls out a gun and opens fire on Max. When Lyle runs out of bullets, Max forces Lyle to admit that he’s working for Aaron, and that Aaron has paid off a lot of other TEC agents as well. Lyle then jumps out the window. Max jumps out after Lyle, grabs him, and takes Lyle with him back to present time, which is now the year 2004, ten years after Melissa’s murder. TEC judge Marshall sentences Lyle to be immediately executed, so Lyle is sent back to 1929 and is dropped to his death from the point in midair where Max and Lyle disappeared to 2004. At TEC Headquarters in 2004, Aaron, Max, and Matuzak are showing Senator Malcolm Nelson around the TEC building. Aaron reminds everyone that people who go back in time risk coming into contact with a past version of themselves. The same matter cannot occupy the same space at the same time, because if that happens, and if it’s a person accidentally making physical contact with their past version, that person will die, and their body will disappear from the face of the Earth. Later, Max tells Matuzak that Aaron wants to shut down the TEC so no one can stop him from altering the past to his advantage, because Aaron is now running for President of the United States. Aaron’s fading campaign for president is dealt a blow when he is denied federal campaign matching funds. Just before Max wakes up, two men break into his home to kill him, but Max turns the tables and kills the two men who broke in. TEC internal affairs investigator Sarah Fielding questions Max. Max soon learns that Sarah may be on the wrong side in this. Max must travel back and forth in time to bring Aaron down…and when Max goes back to 1994 and finds out what Melissa wanted to tell him 10 years ago, it gives Max incentive to at least try to prevent Melissa’s murder.

Where else was a similar plot device to "American Beauty" used?
In "American Beauty" we start by being shown the ending without knowing why it happened. Later sequences (or flashbacks) give us one narrative of how it might have happened, then other ones supersede that with another and then a third.

Where else has this been used, other than "Memento", "Planet of the Apes", Zhang Yimou’s "Hero", the Terminator series, van Damme’s "Timecop" or "Lord of the Rings"? (don’t mention junk like "Back to the Future" trilogy). Who first used it?
Do you also like this plot device?
LilyRT - it’s not so much the nonlinear timeline as the fact that we get several successive narratives, each of which casts the ending in a different light and supersedes the previous ones.

Pulp Fiction and Big Fish–though they don’t quite meet your description. the conclusion isn’t shown at the beginning. It’s just a nonlinear timeline.

Goodfellas–it’s narrated by the guy at the end.
Saving Private Ryan
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Usual Suspects
Gandhi
The Grudge
I also remember this interesting episode of thirtysomething where a dinner was replayed from four different points of view.

Twilight Zone (50s) in To Serve Man is the best, earliest one I can come up with–that one was great.

Thought of an earlier one–Double Indemnity (1944)–a lot of those old detective noir films were narrated first person. It’s not far-fetched to take it a half-step forward and have them narrating a flash-back.

and another Freaks (1932)–not narrated by it starts off by telling the back story to a side show attraction. great flick

OKAY, this is the earliest i can think of–The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)–silent flick. you open with two gentlemen talking about a young woman. they flashback to the story of how she got that way. but, you really don’t get the story til the "reveal" at the end. another great movie. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0010323/

since I love all these examples, I think it’s safe to say I love this device.

EDIT: but American Beauty doesn’t really do that. the only one you mentioned that does that is Hero. the only one I can think of that does that is the episode of thirtysomething. still interesting. looks at a dinner through four different sets of eyes.

In the classic Sunset Boulevard, the William Holden character seen dead in a swimming pool at the beginning narrates what happened to get to that point.

Harold Pintar’s Betrayal is a play and film of a illicit love affair in reverse.

The Japanese film Rashamon by Kurasawa starts after a rape and murder and tells what happened from 4 viewpoints. There is an American version with Paul Newman.

I have a secret, my family's crumbling, and it's me and my mom now, what should I do?
Over the past few years, I’d say since 8th grade things got really bad. Even before then, things were weird, like the day my house was searched for a fugitive or when my step dad had to leave for nine months on a "business" trip.

Needless to say, my childhood was a mixture: a dead biological father, loving step father, overbearing mother that I always saw as perfect, and a sometimes nice ,but mostly selfish brother.

Then, came middle school where I was sent to a new school. Sixth grade I was teased and harrassed, "gay" or "faggot" said directly to my face in attempts of intimidation at the lunch table. I found my ground and backbone, figthing words with words and made my place although, it was tough on the days I’d go home sobbing for my mom to let me change schools.

With all the verbal gaybashing, I started having thoughts. I noticed guys when I should’ve been noticing girls and my family was mostly Jamaica homophobic(a place where gays are run out their neighborhoods and a father can stand by as a mob beats his supposedly gay son).

Even at 8, my parents told me "If you or your brother ever end up gay, we’ll kill you." It wasn’t a threat I took seriously at the time because I had no idea what "gay" was ,but then came the internal battle. The guilt. The nights I spent sobbing to God to make me normal and deep down I was alone. I hated myself. I didn’t want this "thing" inside me.

Then, came that night. The night I was sitting in my mother’s room just watching a movie, my dad had lately gone on a business trip. A knock at the door and in came in some of my step brothers. My dad had been stopped on a highway, he had been caught.

Then, came the Greed wars. His family grabbed for anything he had unsuccesfully as my mother fought like a lion. They came one day while we were at school and robbed us anyway.

Then, came my mother and my brother, the yelling and shouting, his bad grades. Then, the car accident he got in with only a few scratches although the car was totaled. Then, me sobbing in front of the washing machine the day my mother wouldn’t stop yelling at us about chores. I missed my father.

I made it out of middle school scarred, still immensely optimistic and naive although without the belief that everyone in the world was "kind". High school came ,but not without my annual summer visit to Jamaica where my dead father’s side of the family still lived. I love them soo much and I got closer to my cousin.

First year came and went, drama with my close friend and soon she left the school in a cloud of smoke, the police questioning me in the office about what happened to her.

That year, last year, I accepted it, alarmingly it was Oprah who broke down my walls and looked through my soul and said, "Stop fighting it. Love yourself. Love"

Second year of high school, I made true friends, swallowed and my overtaking fear and said those words, "I’m gay" to my first person.

Today, I stand having told 15 people, only three of those family and everyone I’ve told has accepted and love me.

But, there’s still that aching hole in my heart. My mother hates gays, my brother only cares for himself and I have the best friends in the world.

How do I hold onto my mother when she’s so bent on being superior to me because she’s my mother? How can I hold onto her when we have such different opinions on trust and the world?

I want hope, love, and real connections. She relies heavily on family and trusts no one else. She tells me that wanting to be a writer won’t make me happy when I know it will. She tells me if M.L.K. couldn’t change the world, what makes me think I can.

She can be loving ,but she just doesn’t listen to what I have to say, so nothing ever changes when I need it to. We still talk of small things and lately, I just sorta stopped all together. I trust my friends more than her and even if she does accept me, how can I go back?

How I can go back to the boy I was at 10 who didn’t have all these scars? The boy who didn’t love himself totally and completely yet?

Now, I do and I’m wondering. When should I tell her? How do I keep us on decent terms until I tell(I’m thinking the day I leave for college next year when I’m 16)?

Wow. Your story really hit me.

Honestly, I don’t have any good advice, I just wanted to tell you I think you’re very brave, and I think it’s astounding that amidst all of that sorrow and darkness, you’ve found a light within yourself.

Be a writer, you are a writer. I don’t know you at all, but I can tell that much. Keep writing, and you’re going to do something truly amazing.

If I were you though, I’d wait until I was already in college before I told her. You’ll want some distance between you so that she can deal with it without taking it out on you. I’m saying that only because my dearest friend is gay as well, and he had to wait almost fifteen years to tell his parents (his father is a baptist preacher and his mother is very much involved with the church, of course). They did disown him, but it’s their loss because they’ll never see him the way the rest of us do: beautiful, loving, and completely worthy of all the good that life has to offer. By the way, he’s a writer, too. We met in a creative writing course we were both taking in college.

Martin Luther King may have not changed the world, not fully, but he left the door open for others to continue the work. Not just him, but everyone who has tried to bring more beauty and truth to this world. Who is to say that you or anyone else can’t try to do the same?

I wish you the best of luck! Just try to survive this next year– you’ll get through it, I know you will! Keep writing and planning for your future! It’s going to get better! Don’t let her bring you down!
